Introduction
Microsoft has announced that SharePoint Server 2019 will reach end of support on July 14, 2026. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide:
- Security updates
- Bug fixes
- Technical support
- Compliance-related updates
Continuing to run SharePoint 2019 beyond its end-of-support date may expose organizations to security vulnerabilities, operational risks, and potential compliance challenges. For many organizations, remaining on a supported platform is a requirement for internal IT governance, cybersecurity standards, and regulatory compliance.
SharePoint Subscription Edition (SE) is the successor to SharePoint Server 2019 and provides a modernized servicing model with regular feature updates, ongoing security patches, and long-term support. Upgrading ensures that the SharePoint platform remains secure, supported, and aligned with Microsoft’s current roadmap.
For customers running LiveTiles Intranet on SharePoint 2019, upgrading to SharePoint Subscription Edition is therefore not only recommended but necessary to maintain a supported and secure intranet environment.
This document outlines the required considerations and product-specific configuration updates needed to ensure a smooth transition to SharePoint Subscription Edition.
SharePoint Farm Migration to SPSE
Microsoft requires customers upgrading from SharePoint Server 2019 to SharePoint Subscription Edition (SPSE) to follow the supported database attach (DB attach) upgrade method. An in-place upgrade of a SharePoint 2019 farm to Subscription Edition is not supported.
The database attach approach ensures a controlled, predictable, and supported transition to SPSE by building a new farm and migrating databases from the existing environment.
Customers should follow Microsoft’s official upgrade documentation throughout the migration process.

Required Steps After SharePoint SE Upgrade
After the SharePoint Subscription Edition (SPSE) farm has been installed and the content databases have been successfully upgraded using Microsoft’s supported database attach method, additional configuration is required to ensure that LiveTiles Intranet functions correctly in the new environment.
Although the SharePoint content and site collections are migrated as part of the database attach process, the trust relationship between LiveTiles and SharePoint does not automatically carry over to the new farm. This is because SharePoint Subscription Edition is deployed as a new farm with a new farm identity, authentication realm, and security context. As a result, any existing SharePoint Add-in registrations, client IDs, secrets, and high-trust configurations from SharePoint 2019 are not valid in the upgraded environment.
To restore full functionality, LiveTiles must be reconfigured to establish a new trust relationship with the SPSE farm. This includes creating a new App Registration, updating authentication settings, redeploying the SharePoint app package, and verifying that the high-trust certificate configuration aligns with the new farm.
Without completing these post-migration configuration steps, users may experience authentication errors, missing functionality, or integration failures between LiveTiles and SharePoint. The following section describes the required actions to ensure that LiveTiles operates correctly and securely with SharePoint Subscription Edition.
LiveTiles – Post-Migration Configuration Steps
Once the SharePoint Subscription Edition farm has been deployed and the content databases have been successfully mounted, LiveTiles also requires additional configuration to function correctly in the upgraded environment.
The sections referenced below correspond to the “LiveTiles Enterprise Add-in On-premises Installation Guide” That can be found here: (https://support.livetilesglobal.com/hc/en-us/articles/18416182931225-Enterprise-Add-in-On-premises-Installation-Guide) and should be followed to complete the required configuration. By reviewing and applying the relevant installation steps, administrators can ensure that LiveTiles is correctly authenticated, deployed, and fully operational in the new SharePoint environment.
1. Re-establish High Trust certificate configuration
The new SPSE farm requires a new High Trust registration. Follow the steps in the section “Add new high-trust for Intranet WA”.
If certificates were renewed as part of the migration, update accordingly.
2. Creating a new App Registration
A new App Registration must be created in the SPSE farm. Please follow the instructions written in the Installation Guide under the section describing “Register New App”
Remember to save the ClientID and Secret, as they are required when generating or updating the LiveTiles App package and updating the configuration file for LiveTiles Enterprise website.
3. Updating or regenerating the LiveTiles Enterprise App package
The existing LiveTiles app package from SharePoint 2019 will not function in SPSE because it references the old ClientID.
Do the following:
- Update or regenerate the LiveTiles App package to use the new ClientID and a new productid
Follow the instructions in the LiveTiles Installation Guide regarding App package generation “Create app package”.
4. Redeploying the LiveTiles SharePoint app
The old LiveTiles app must be removed from the SharePoint SE App Catalog. Follow the instructions in the installation guide under “Upload app package to SharePoint app catalog” where the following steps should be done:
- Remove the old LiveTiles app from the SPSE App Catalog.
(Remember to delete from 1 and 2 stage recycle bin) - Upload the updated app package.
- Approve the app.
- Deploy the app to the required managed paths.
- Install the app on the SharePoint web application referencing LiveTiles Enterprise.
5. Updating the website configuration file
On the server where the LiveTiles Enterprise intranet is installed, update the website configuration file as described in the installation guide "Update web.config file". Update the following settings:
- ClientID
- ClientSecret
- ClientSigningCertificatePath (if changed)
- ClientSigningCertificatePassword (if changed)
- IssuerId
After updating the settings, perform an IISRESET on the LiveTiles server.
6. Validating authentication and functionality
After redeployment, verify that LiveTiles loads correctly and that no authentication errors appear.
Validate the following:
- Web parts render correctly
- Pages load without ClientID or permission errors
- User access works as expected
- Access to LiveTiles Enterprise configuration site
Failure to complete these steps will result in authentication failures and incomplete integration between LiveTiles Intranet and SharePoint.
Conclusion
Upgrading from SharePoint Server 2019 to SharePoint Subscription Edition is a necessary step to maintain a secure, supported, and future-proof SharePoint environment. While the database attach method ensures that content and configurations are migrated in a supported manner, additional LiveTiles-specific configuration is essential to fully restore functionality in the new farm.
Because SharePoint Subscription Edition is deployed as a new farm with a new identity and security context, the trust relationship between SharePoint and LiveTiles must be re-established. This includes creating a new App Registration, configuring high-trust authentication, redeploying the LiveTiles SharePoint app, updating Web configuration settings, and validating authentication and tenant configurations.
Carefully following both Microsoft’s official upgrade documentation and the relevant sections of the LiveTiles installation guide will ensure a controlled and successful transition. When all post-migration steps have been completed and validated, LiveTiles Intranet will operate securely and correctly within the SharePoint Subscription Edition environment, aligned with Microsoft’s current support lifecycle and servicing model.
