Understanding Termset navigation in SharePoint
Enterprise have breadcrumb functionality, but can only work within the limits of termset navigation when using Managed Metadata Navigation.
In SharePoint, you can choose between two navigation methods: structural navigation or managed navigation. Structural navigation is based on site structure. Managed navigation is based on term sets. Managed navigation lets you define and maintain your site navigation by using term sets.
A termset (Site Navigation) is created automatically when the site collection is created.
Pages can be created in hierarchy. Webs are not included in termset, only pages. Webs will need to be created manually and maintained manually.
Webs can have their own termset. When creating a termset on a subweb, you are basically creating an isolated navigation context. No relationship exists between the termset on rootweb and the termset on a subweb.
Multiple termsets example with breadcrumb
This show and example of multiple termsets and the expected breadcrumb.
Termset with node hierarchy (Page 1, Page 1.1) to Subweb 1.1.1. Subweb 1.1.1 is linking to web named Subsite 1.
Subsite 1 is a web that has its own termset.
This shows how Subweb 1.1.1 looks when navigating to a subpage (subweb page 1.1) of Subweb 1.1.1.
Please note that the subweb 1.1.1 has changed its name to Subsite 1 (the actual name of the web) and Page 1 and Page 1.1 is missing from breadcrumb. This is because Page 1, Page 1.1 and Subweb 1.1.1 is part of another termset. Rootweb is still showing because it is the name of the root web in the Sitecollection. Breadcrumb now shows terms in the isolated navigation context of Subsite 1.
When using multiple termsets, please be aware of this behaviour.
Clear cache
When moving pages, renaming webs etc. it sometimes require clearing the Enterprise cache.
Enterprise caches breadcrumb for 24 hours.
